Hospital Bag: frequently asked questions
What should be in a Nigerian hospital bag?
A Nigerian hospital bag should include maternity pads, disposable panties, a nursing bra, breast pads, a robe and slippers, toiletries, and phone charger for mum; and newborn nappies, cotton wool, muslin cloths, a receiving blanket, mittens, a hat, and a going-home outfit for baby. Most Lagos and Abuja hospitals do not provide these — bring everything.
When should I start packing my hospital bag?
Start packing between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Babies can arrive early, and having the bag ready by the start of the third trimester means you're not scrambling if labour starts unexpectedly.
Do I need separate bags for mum and baby?
Yes — most Nigerian hospitals prefer two separate bags: one for mum's labour and postpartum essentials, and one for baby's clothes, nappies and going-home outfit. It also makes it easier for your partner or family to find items quickly.
