How to Choose the Right Maternity Wear for Every Trimester
Pregnancy brings a lot of changes, and your wardrobe is one of them. Maternity wear isn't just about sizing up — it's about pieces that actually move with your body, support it, and still feel like you. Here's a trimester-by-trimester guide to dressing comfortably, whether you're working, resting, or heading out.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)
Most women aren't visibly showing yet, but hormonal changes, tender breasts, and bloating can make your usual clothes feel tighter than expected. Look for stretchy waistbands, loose-fitting dresses and tops that give you room to breathe, and soft cotton underwear that sits comfortably below the belly.
Cardigans and kimonos are useful for layering, since early pregnancy tends to bring sudden waves of feeling too warm. Tunics, boyfriend shirts, and high-waisted leggings work well for errands or working from home, and darker shades or prints can help with unexpected bloating on harder days.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27)
Often called the "golden trimester" — energy tends to pick back up, morning sickness usually eases, and your bump becomes visible. It's a good stretch to enjoy dressing the bump rather than hiding it. Empire-waist dresses that cinch under the bust, side-ruched tops that grow with you, and supportive maternity bras with wider bands all earn their place here.
Maxi skirts, elastic-waist trousers, and jersey wrap dresses work for church, events, or office days, and fitted maternity dresses are a nice option for brunch or a special occasion. Don't be afraid to accessorise — scarves, bangles, and earrings can lift even a simple outfit.
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40+)
Comfort takes priority now. Your back may ache, your feet may swell, and breathing can feel different as the bump gets bigger. Breathable fabrics like cotton and bamboo help prevent overheating, and wrap dresses or front-open nightwear make both dressing and bathroom trips easier. Compression leggings or a maternity belt can help with belly and back support on harder days.
Avoid anything that presses on your belly — kaftans, nightgowns, and breezy wrap styles are far more forgiving. It's also worth choosing maternity nightwear that can double as hospital wear later on, so you're not shopping twice. Flat sandals and a headwrap round out a look that's easy to move in.
Postpartum
Don't pack your maternity wear away just yet — a lot of it earns its keep again in the weeks after delivery. Nursing bras and camis with easy access, front-button nightwear, high-waisted briefs or postpartum wraps for extra support, and loungewear that's nursing-friendly all carry over well into the fourth trimester.
A Few General Tips
Buy in stages rather than stocking up early — your body will keep changing gradually through each trimester. Prioritise versatility over quantity: a few well-made pieces you can wear during and after pregnancy go further than a full new wardrobe.
Try before you buy where you can, or lean on size charts and reviews when shopping online. And with Nigeria's climate in mind, choose breathable, sweat-absorbing fabrics over anything heavy or synthetic — it makes a real difference day to day.
Pregnancy doesn't mean giving up your style. With the right maternity wear for each stage, you can stay comfortable, supported, and still feel like yourself through all three trimesters and beyond.
