Preparing Your Home for a Baby: Essentials Every Mum Needs Before Delivery

Preparing Your Home for a Baby: Essentials Every Mum Needs Before Delivery

Welcoming a newborn is one of life's biggest transitions, and one of the best ways to ease into it is by getting your home ready ahead of time. From the sleep space to the diaper station, a little organisation now means you can spend those first weeks bonding with your baby instead of hunting for supplies at 2am.

A Comfortable Sleeping Space

Your baby's sleep space should be safe, cozy, and easy to reach in the middle of the night. At minimum, you'll want a cot or bassinet with a firm mattress, 2–3 fitted cot sheets, a mosquito net, and soft lighting or a night lamp so you're not switching on full lights for late feeds.

A Feeding Station

Whether you're breastfeeding or using formula, having everything in one spot saves real time and stress. A nursing chair or comfortable seat with back support, a nursing pillow, feeding bottles and a steriliser, a bottle rack, and a stack of burp cloths and bibs cover most of what you'll reach for daily.

Diapering Supplies

Changing diapers is a round-the-clock job in the early weeks, so it's worth staying ahead of it: newborn and size 1 diapers, wipes and cotton wool, a changing mat, diaper rash cream, and a covered bin or disposable bags. A small diaper basket in your bedroom and another in the living area saves a lot of back-and-forth.

Clothing and Laundry

Babies go through several outfit changes a day, so having clothing sorted and laundry basics ready pays off quickly. Aim for 6–8 onesies and sleepsuits, caps, mittens and socks, a few soft receiving blankets, a laundry basket, and a mild baby detergent. Wash everything before first use to clear out any factory chemicals.

Bath Time

You don't need much — a baby bathtub or sponge bath mat, a towel and washcloths, mild baby soap, shampoo and lotion, and a bath rack or stand if you'd rather not bend over the tub each time. A bath thermometer is a nice-to-have, not essential.

A Basic Health and Grooming Kit

Keep a digital thermometer, nail clippers or baby scissors, a nasal aspirator, cotton buds, and a health records file together in one drawer or pouch — small tools that go a long way when you need them in a hurry.

Baby-Proofing, for Later

Newborns won't be moving around for a while, but it's worth starting to think about cabinet and drawer locks, baby gates if you have stairs, corner protectors, and plug covers — nothing urgent, just easier to plan for early than to scramble for later.

A Few Final Touches

A waterproof mat for your bed helps during postpartum recovery or co-sleeping, and a white noise machine, some storage bins for baby supplies, and a stocked "mama corner" with snacks, water, and a charger make those long nights easier. Don't forget your own postpartum care items either — maternity pads, breast pads, nipple cream, and nursing bras are just as much a part of getting ready as anything on baby's list.

Preparing your home isn't really about having every single item — it's about peace of mind. The more settled your space feels before delivery, the more room you'll have to focus on your baby and your own recovery once they arrive.
